God of War Laufey delayed to May 20, 2027 as Santa Monica Studio takes three extra months
On November 4, 2026, Santa Monica Studio officially delayed God of War Laufey. The PS5 exclusive was due on February 16, 2027 and will now launch on May 20, 2027, a little over three months later. The game follows Faye, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother. The studio says it wants the extra time for finishing touches and to push the game "to its fullest potential." It did not point to any specific development problem. The game hasn't shipped yet, so everything known about its content still needs to be confirmed at launch.
What Santa Monica Studio said
The studio posted the news on its official X and Bluesky accounts. It began by thanking fans for their excitement about Faye's journey through the Everywhen since the June reveal, and said it does not take their trust for granted. It then confirmed the new May 20, 2027 date and said the team would "make the most of each moment" until then to polish the game. The message ended by thanking players for their patience and promising more updates soon.
As usual with big-budget games, the explanation is vague. The studio talks about polish and finishing touches but names no particular technical issue.
The press coverage doesn't fully agree on the numbers. Most outlets describe the delay as three months, while Game Informer called it roughly two months. GamesRadar+ gave the original date as February 17. However, PlayStation's official game page and the PlayStation Blog both listed February 16, 2027, and February 16 to May 20 is just over three months.
From reveal to delay in five months
God of War Laufey was revealed at the June 2, 2026 State of Play with around twenty minutes of gameplay. In late July, at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio announced the February 16, 2027 date. At the same panel, Cory Barlog, the studio's head of creative, confirmed that a new Kratos-led God of War is in the works and will tie directly into Laufey's story.
Pre-orders opened on September 29. The PlayStation Blog listed the pre-order bonus for every edition: the Last Wish Armor Set, a Golden Leaves cosmetic for Phranque, and an in-game resource pack. The same day, Sony revealed a new weapon for Faye, the Serpent's Bow, a ranged option you can weave into melee combos. On October 13, Sony revealed a $149.99 / €149.99 / £129.99 Collector Box, sold in very limited quantities through PlayStation's direct store. It does not include the game.
Pre-orders and the Collector Box: still unclear
VideoCardz noted that Sony's store still showed the original date when the delay was announced. It was not yet clear how the delay would affect pre-orders and physical editions. The Collector Box had been dated February 16, 2027, and it had no new public date at the time of the announcement. If you pre-ordered, watch for updates from your retailer or PlayStation over the coming days.
What we know about the game (preview, to be confirmed at launch)
God of War Laufey is the first mainline entry in the series where Kratos isn't the main character. Players control Faye, played by Deborah Ann Woll. She wakes up after her funeral in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from different mythologies fight for power. The story runs alongside God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, as Faye tries to protect the plans she made for Kratos and Atreus. Her combat looks faster and more acrobatic than Kratos', built around her sword and the Serpent's Bow. Her companions include Phranque, a talking gelatinous cosmic cube. Ariel Lawrence is the game director. The game remains a PS5 exclusive and will get a physical release.
On the trophy side, Pathline will publish its guide as soon as the official list is available.
Key takeaways
God of War Laufey now launches on May 20, 2027 on PS5, instead of February 16, 2027. The delay is official and comes from Santa Monica Studio. The only reason given is extra polish, with no specific problem mentioned. It's still unclear how pre-orders and the Collector Box will be handled. Everything known about the game so far comes from reveals and trailers, so we'll have to wait until May to judge it properly.
