Is GTA 6 more extreme than GTA 5? What the ratings actually say
On October 1, 2026, Rockstar swapped the long-standing "Rating Pending" badge for GTA 6's finished certificates, on its own website and on the PlayStation and Xbox store pages: Mature 17+ from the ESRB (North America) and 18 from PEGI (Europe). The game releases November 19, 2026. But a PEGI listing, published briefly and then deleted, reignited the question of whether GTA 6 really goes further than GTA 5.
What the ESRB says (and what it doesn't change)
GTA 6's ESRB listing carries 7 content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus an In-Game Purchases notice. Those are, word for word, the same 7 descriptors GTA 5 already carried back in 2013. On paper, the ESRB isn't rating GTA 6 any more severely than its predecessor: the categories haven't moved.
The deleted PEGI listing: more detail than usual
It's the European listing that got people talking. PEGI briefly published an unusually detailed description before pulling it from its site without explanation, and Rockstar hasn't commented. Several outlets (including Forbes) caught it before it came down. Among the details it described:
- violence that is "bloody with a high degree of realism," with certain weapons capable of detailed decapitation and dismemberment;
- "scenes of intercourse and occasionally scenes of sexual fetishes";
- a strip club where the player can pay for private dances and move their hands onto the dancers;
- a more developed drug mechanic than before: cocaine can be carried in the inventory and used directly by hand, at any time, not just in a scripted cutscene.
So, more extreme than GTA 5 or not?
The honest answer is "it depends what you're measuring." If you look only at the letter of the rating (Mature 17+, PEGI 18), nothing has changed from GTA 5: both games fall into the same categories. What's new is the unusual level of detail in this PEGI listing, and the fact that some of what it describes (on-demand cocaine use, hands-on interaction at a strip club) depicts more explicit mechanics than anything Rockstar ever documented for GTA 5 at launch. New Zealand and Australian classification listings have also reportedly flagged more extreme adult content, though Rockstar and the boards involved haven't officially confirmed or denied those specifics at this point.

The bottom line
GTA 6 is officially Mature 17+ / PEGI 18, exactly like GTA 5. The difference comes from a short-lived, unusually detailed PEGI listing describing mechanics (on-demand drug use, strip club interactions, detailed decapitation) more explicit than anything Rockstar ever publicly confirmed for the previous game. None of it has been officially detailed by Rockstar itself yet.
