God of War Laufey's $150 Collector Box doesn't include the game
Sony and Santa Monica Studio revealed the God of War Laufey Collector Box on October 13, priced at $149.99 (€149.99, £129.99). The box includes an 8-inch resin statue depicting Faye, Phranque and Rue fighting Begtse's soldiers (Phranque lights up when plugged into USB power), a 51-card Oracle Deck illustrated by artist Megan Lara, and a mini artbook of concept art selected by the studio's art team. It does not include the game, a download code, or a SteelBook.
What's in the box, and what's missing
The game has to be bought separately, physically or digitally, on top of the box's $150 price tag. The Digital Deluxe Edition content (the Dark Alchemy armor set, weapons, soundtrack) isn't included in the Collector Box either. The box is sold in "highly limited quantities," exclusively through PlayStation's own stores (including PlayStation Direct), in a limited set of countries: the US, UK, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and a few other European markets. Preorders opened October 13.
A break from the franchise's past collector's editions
This marks a clear shift from God of War's previous collector's editions: the 2018 one (around $130) included a SteelBook copy of the game, and the Ragnarök one (around $200) included a game voucher. For Laufey, Sony flips that logic: the box becomes a standalone merchandise product, with the game left as a separate purchase.
Not an isolated case in the industry
This approach isn't unique to Sony. GTA 6's Collector Box, priced at $399.99, follows the same model: no game included, just merchandise. Several fans reacted negatively to the Laufey Collector Box announcement, criticizing Sony for selling a $150 box that, ultimately, contains no playable content at all.
And the game itself?
God of War Laufey is a PlayStation 5 exclusive developed by Santa Monica Studio, announced at a State of Play and confirmed for a February 16, 2027 release, with a physical disc version despite Sony's announced plan to stop producing PS5 discs for games releasing after January 2028.

The bottom line
The God of War Laufey Collector Box costs $150 for a light-up statue, a card deck, and an artbook, but no game and no code of any kind, unlike the franchise's previous collector's editions which always included the game. A choice that moves Sony closer to the approach Rockstar already took with GTA 6, and one that has drawn backlash from part of the fanbase.
