Gears of War: E-Day, a $400 Million Bet, Stays Xbox-Exclusive Despite Falling Hardware Sales
Following our article on Xbox's latest wave of layoffs and studio reorganization, another number deserves attention: Gears of War: E-Day, launching October 6, 2026, reportedly cost over $400 million to produce, according to industry reporter Tom Henderson (Insider Gaming). Microsoft has neither confirmed nor disputed the figure.
An all-in Xbox bet, not a cent from PS5
Developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios, E-Day stays exclusive to Xbox Series X|S, alongside PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Game Pass day one. Neither PS5 nor Switch 2 will get it, ever. Microsoft has confirmed this outright: it is not a timed exclusive.
Matthew Ball, Xbox's Chief Strategy Officer, was blunt about it: "There are no conversations and have been no conversations to reverse course." Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer, meanwhile promises "signature exclusives from us every year," pointing out that Xbox stewards "over 20 game franchises that have made a billion dollars in their lifetime."
The catch: Xbox console sales keep sinking
This exclusivity bet comes as Xbox hardware revenue keeps falling quarter after quarter in fiscal year 2026: -29% in Q1 (Jul-Sep 2025), -32% in Q2 (Oct-Dec 2025), -33% in Q3 (Jan-Mar 2026). Betting $400 million on a game that can only recoup its budget from a shrinking console base is exactly the tension industry watchers keep pointing to.
And this comes right after Xbox laid off several hundred more people this same week and reorganized much of its internal studio structure (see our restructuring article): a big creative bet on one hand, budget cuts on the other.
Not alone: Clockwork Revolution follows the same path
Clockwork Revolution, developed by inXile Entertainment and expected in 2027, is confirmed on the same model: Xbox console exclusive, no PS5 or Switch 2 version planned.
What about you, PS5 player?
Bottom line: if you're on PS5, E-Day will never be part of your Platinum catalog, no matter what happens. If you're on PC, though, the game is listed on Steam ($69.99): a Steam achievement sync could join Pathline if a guide gets built for it, like other PC titles in our catalog.
