Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 billed as "the conclusion" of the reboot
The official description for the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 trailer, shown at the Xbox Tokyo Game Show on September 17, 2026, calls the game the "epic conclusion": "Witness the epic conclusion. From Korea to the farthest reaches of the globe, Task Force 141 faces a war with no borders." Activision has not issued any press release clarifying exactly what that word covers.
The end of what, exactly?
Two readings are circulating. The first: the game closes out the story of the Modern Warfare reboot launched in 2019, which also gave rise to Warzone. The second, narrower one: it's only the conclusion of Captain Price's personal arc, hunted as a fugitive since Task Force 141 was disbanded following the events of Modern Warfare 3 (2023). Activision hasn't settled it either way.
Korea, a fugitive Price, and a heavyweight antagonist
The story depicts North Korea invading South Korea, with joint ROK-US Marine ground and amphibious operations. Price, now a fugitive, is hunted by Ghost and Gaz while staying in contact with the CIA's Kate Laswell; Valeria Garza, introduced in Modern Warfare 2, becomes his ally. An antagonist named "the Archer" is searching for an unknown weapon. Activision confirmed at the same Tokyo Game Show that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (Death Stranding) will play one of the campaign's major antagonists.
Is Black Ops wrapping up too?
Treyarch design director Kevin Drew said the studio wants to "make something new and something that nobody's ever experienced before," after two back-to-back Black Ops games. If both Modern Warfare and Black Ops are ending their current stories at the same time, it would be the first time since 2010 that Call of Duty has no established sub-franchise in active production.
Release and early access
Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 (not available at launch on PS4, Xbox One, or Xbox Game Pass). Digital pre-orders unlock early campaign access on October 16, a week ahead of general release.

The bottom line
"Epic conclusion" is official wording, but its exact scope isn't. Whether it means the end of the 2019 reboot or just Price's personal story, Activision hasn't confirmed either way. With Black Ops apparently turning a page at the same time, it's a level of uncertainty around Call of Duty's sub-franchise future that hasn't been seen since 2010.
